SIT-Summer Institute in Taiwan
Academic Exchange & Cultural Experience in Taiwan
Mihaela Pupavac
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and National Science Council (NSC) in Taiwan co-sponsored Summer Program in Taiwan was highly beneficial to my research my knowledge of Taiwanese culture. My research of finding genes for Mendelian disorders will greatly benefit by including Taiwanese patients in the study. Discovery of variants in genes responsible for the disorders of the Taiwanese patients studies this summer, will contribute to scientific knowledge of etiology of these disorders, and will allow for future studies to develop therapies for better treatment. Although the primary benefit of this program was the scientific collaboration and identifying candidate diseases and patients for further study, I also immensely benefited from learning more about Taiwan and Taiwanese culture. The project commenced this summer will take more time to complete, and I will continue to work with Dr. Lee and her colleagues at the National Taiwan University Hospital. I believe this experience will also encourage me to collaborate with other Taiwanese researchers in the future. This program provided an ideal balanceof science research with experience of local culture.
