SIT-Summer Institute in Taiwan
Academic Exchange & Cultural Experience in Taiwan
Peter Greene
This project has strengthened what was already a fruitful collaboration between our groups. We have measured more than 37 seven different patterns on four different film structures to analyze thermal and field dependant properties as a function of both pattern size and film structure. We have also exchanged specific expertise in sample fabrication and measurement. These measurements have been performed in close collaboration with students from Prof. Lai’s lab which has forged bonds that will last far beyond this summer. This work will continue into the future and will very likely result in a peer reviewed journal article.

Beyond the purely scientific benefits, this program has afforded me the opportunity to become intimately familiar with the Taiwanese culture and landscape. I have never found people so friendly and willing to go out of their way to be helpful and accommodating. This is especially important given the language barrier and I was amazed by the incredible desire of the locals to communicate by any means necessary. This is augmented by the delicious food and incredible scenery around the island. I will never forget this truly special experience that I have been lucky to be a part of.
