Our participation in the 2012 Taiwan NSC SIT/USA NSF EAPSI program has been a very pleasant and productive experience. The visiting student, Mr. Matan Shelomi, was from the Department of Entomology in the University of California-Davis. His dissertation research is focused on the biology of Phasmids. He came to our lab to initiate a collaborative project with us, which uses high-throughput DNA sequencing to investigate the microoganisms in the gut of these insects. During his stay this summer, we performed all of the experiments he proposed and have started the initial steps of analysis. Based on the preliminary findings that we have, we plan to continue this collaborative project.
In addition to working on his own research project, Matan had plenty of opportunities to interact with the people in our lab. The exchange of ideas between people with entomology, microbiology, and bioinformatics background was very helpful for everyone to learn more about cross‐disciplinary research. Outside of work, Matan also had the chances to visit different parts of Taiwan and to discuss the cultural differences between US and Taiwan with us. Overall, he and all people in our lab benefited a lot from this experience and we thank the funding agency for providing us with this great opportunity.
